Tony Romo was fast and loose with the football last week. But after arguably the worst game of his career, at least the Dallas Cowboys' quarterback held tight to his sense of accountability.

"I felt I was to blame and I deserve everything that comes after that," he told reporters days after his 127-yard, three-interception passing performance in a 33-31 loss to the New York Giants.

"I have to play better, and like I said, I'm going to play better. For me, that's the way it is. It's clear. It's pretty cut and dried."

Tonight, Romo gets a chance at redemption. The Cowboys, who have yet to christen their palatial new stadium with a regular-season victory, play host to 0-2 Carolina in their second consecutive prime-time game.

The Panthers have been even more careless with the ball, entering Week 3 at minus-five in turnover ratio. Quarterback Jake Delhomme, who had a horrendous game in a 38-10 defeat to Philadelphia in the opener, looked better in last Sunday's 28-20 loss at Atlanta. He threw for 308 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Carolina is 0-2 for the first time since 2006, and only the second time in the era of Coach John Fox. The previous 0-2 Panther team finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs.

One of the Cowboys' best offensive weapons, running back Marion Barber, is listed as questionable with a thigh injury. Fortunately for Dallas, the team is deep at the position, with Felix Jones and Tashard Choice ready to shoulder the load if Barber cannot.

Cowboys Coach Wade Phillips is proceeding with caution.

Phillips said of Barber: "I don't want him to be in a situation where, No. 1, he could be hurt worse and you lose him for a longer amount of time."

Chris Canty's return to Dallas is in doubt.

The New York Giants defensive tackle missed practice and his status for Sunday night's game in Dallas against the Cowboys is uncertain.

Canty, who left Dallas to sign with the Giants as a free agent, was hurt in practice Wednesday. He received treatment Thursday while the team practiced.

Starting safety Kenny Phillips (knee) returned to practice on a limited basis and had a couple of interceptions. Michael Johnson, the other starting safety, missed his second practice with a shoulder injury, but coach Tom Coughlin thinks he has a chance to play. Linebacker Michael Boley (hip) showed improvement and has a shot at playing, Coughlin said.

As Jets wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery sat in a meeting room at the team’s Florham Park complex this past week watching film of the Patriots-Bills game, he was struck by the absence of four longtime adversaries.

New England linebackers Tedy Bruschi and Mike Vrabel, safety Rodney Harrison and defensive end Richard Seymour had vanished without a trace.

During the Patriots’ much-celebrated Super Bowl run, the foursome had been as much a part of the defense — and team — as the logo on their helmets.

Together, the quartet had 45 years of NFL experience, 32 with the Patriots. Bruschi, Seymour and Vrabel were on all three Super Bowl-winning teams. Harrison was on two. The Patriots’ defense has been ranked in the top-10 in five of the past six seasons.

Bruschi and Harrison retired this past offseason, and Vrabel was traded to the Chiefs. In a shocking move, five-time Pro Bowler Seymour, in his ninth season, was dealt to the Raiders the week before the season started.

San Diego Chargers
vs
Oakland Riders

Date: September 15th
Time: 02:15 (GMT)
The San Diego Chargers feel they have a team capable of winning a Super Bowl. They start their run for Lombardi Monday night against division rival Oakland at McAfee Coliseum in the second game of ESPN’s Monday Night Football double header. While Oakland leads the all-time series 54-42-2, it has lost 11 straight, most recently going down 34-7 last December. NFL odds makers feel San Diego will make it 12 straight, listing the Chargers as a 9.5-point favorite with the total set at 43.

The Chargers have won three straight AFC West titles and appear poised to make it four in a row, but it would not be wise to take the Raiders lightly in this Week 1 matchup. After 11 straight defeats at the hands of the Chargers, we can expect Oakland to be leaving it all out on the field, especially in front of its rowdy home crowd. Plus, the storied Silver and Black always seem to rise to the occasion when in the Monday Night spotlight, holding a 15-6 all-time record on Monday Night Football when playing at home. Over the last couple seasons, the Raiders have been trying to break in quarterback JaMarcus Russell, and it appears he’s starting to adapt to the NFL game when you consider his solid play down the stretch last season. The team is hoping to see he and running back Darren McFadden make big leaps in 2009. McFadden was hampered by a turf toe injury in his rookie season, forcing him to miss games and taking away his burst. Both figure to be challenged by what is expected to be a stiff San Diego defense. If you think Oakland has what it takes to keep this one close on the Monday night stage, bet the Raiders at +9.5 at BetUS.

The Chargers managed to squeak out the AFC West division in 2008 and went on to win a playoff game, but by and large, the team considers last year’s campaign a disappointing one. Running back LaDainian Tomlinson and tight end Antonio Gates dealt with nagging injuries and outside linebacker Shawne Merriman missed nearly the entire season with a knee injury. All three players are 100 percent heading into the season. Well, at least physically. Merriman may not be all there mentally as he is dealing with allegations that he choked reality star Tila Tequila. There are also questions as to whether he will be as explosive as he was prior to the knee injury. This week, fellow linebacker Shaun Phillips should have Merriman’s back, though. He has 9.5 career sacks against Oakland which is the most he has against any team. LaDainian Tomlinson will be the guy I focus on in this matchup. His numbers still turned out pretty decent last season, but if you watched him play you could tell how much his toe injury was limiting him. It will be interesting to see if his sharp cutting ability and explosiveness fully return this season. If not, quarterback Philip Rivers proved that he can win games with his arm. And the Chargers would likely have to get more creative with the offense, making it a priority to get Darren Sproles the ball in a variety of ways.
